Chapter 2: Her

When the pair finally arrived, dusk had fallen and the stars were beginning to twinkle softly.  Had Louis been conscious, she would not have recognized where they were. The barren rocks were reddish with different varieties of moss growing on them.  Since they were still in Wunderland, the moss came in various hues one would never see in any other region or realm.  Here there were  bright greens, indigo, and violet.  In some places, one could see scorch marks and a black fungus spreading across cracked boulders.

The massive bird carrying her pale, limp body gave one final push with his wings and soared through what seemed to be a fissure in the cliff face towards the top of the mound of boulders.  A small, dark shadow moved from the plateau at the top and swept in silently behind.

She was waiting in the depths of Her new stronghold.  The rock walls were soot covered from excavation and explosions. Torches lined the entryway. Smokeless of course, She simply enjoyed the ambiance too much to use glow worm holders. The Raven's musk grew stronger as he glided towards Her, the body clutched in his claws scraping against the still rough bedrock floor.  She smiled serenely as he released his prey and hopped over.

"Well done pet," She pulled a dangling rope nearby and something clicked.  A runty, white hare sped forward, disappearing into the growing darkness outside.  The Raven simply cocked his head and watched it disappear into the growing darkness outside."Hmm, you want to play do you? Well, that game of hide and seek is just beginning. Let him go for now. It will make for a better chase later on." She whistled twice sharply and the Raven took leave of her to his nest above the entrance.

"Now....let the games begin." As She turned toward the pale blue heap of sodden skirts, the damp mop of hair at one end remained silent and still.  "Well, this wont be any fun if you don't wake up." She clapped her hands and two monkeys sped down one of the connecting passages, stirring up all the dust that had settled from the excavations.  Coughing lightly, She made a mental note to have all the flooring and rest of the renovations finished at end of tomorrow.  "Take this to the inner chambers - lower levels. Make sure its ready tomorrow evening- no later!" Knowing that was taken care of, She left down the silent and dark main passage.

The monkeys chittered as they ran around the soggy, cold pile. Eventually they just grabbed a handful here and a handful there and made their way down a side tunnel that sloped downward.   Louis felt nothing as the dragged her along, her thoughts and dreams were dark.  She was lost in a dark maze looking for the caterpillars, Abby needed her help and he would have answers.

Something tapped her mental shoulder. She whirled around. Nothing. Continuing into the dark maze, she tried to stay left.  She'd found that left often led right in Wunderland mazes. The texture of the walls constantly changed under her fingertips as she dragged them across following the left. (which of course would set her right at the end)

The tap was on her Right shoulder this time and she whirled Left. "aha!" Her fingers caught onto the frayed edge of someone's (or Something's) shirt.

Louis had heard Abby refer to this part of the Maze.  She got up and kept her hand on the wall, craning her neck, she twisted around gazing at the infinite reflections of herself.  She didn't see an opening ANYWHERE. But there was something that looked like corridor if you angled your head the right way. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and dashed for it.  Suddenly the world was cold. And wet. Opening her eyes Louis saw only darkness.  "Up you get!" a voice said out of the darkness, "Time for some tea and conversation."  Her shoulders were jerked up and hands helped her onto her numb feet. Louis stumbled towards  a faint glow on the other side of her cavern, leaning heavily on someone's arm.  She shuffled her numb feet and fought shivers off. The Maze had let her go before she could find a way in...or out. She had decided to fetch her guest herself.  Questions needed to be answered.  Sometimes She wished there was more help involved with her

Exerpt

She leaned over Louis, taking in her pale, clammy skin and noting the elevated heart rate.  "I haven't even dosed her yet, and she's gone through a trance portal." She mused.   Taking the girl's pulse, She lifted an eyelid, smiling when there was no trace of an iris. "She's completely submerged, I may have to re-visit the crow wing notes to see how the hormonal chemistry developed."  Dropping the wrist, She allowed the lid to snap back in place as she hurried back to her cavern, slinging orders down various tunnels.  Much needed to be done. Louis sat in the room of mirrors and rubbed her forehead.  She hated this part of the maze.  Slowly standing up she turned around, looking at each reflection carefully. There had to be a gap, an exit. Walking up to a mirror she put her hands against it, fingertip to fingertip with the copy of herself. Sideways she slid, fingers searching for the edge. Suddenly she no longer faced herself, her fingers felt no res
